Brooke & Jacob

I’m very excited to be sharing photographs from Brooke and Jacob’s engagement session we had in Monterey, CA last week. I had a great time getting to know both of them. Engagement sessions are always the best way for a newly engaged couple to get to know their wedding photographer, and also a great opportunity to get used to being in front of a camera. Well Brooke and Jacob had absolutely no problem being in front of the camera. Total naturals. I felt like I was working with a couple seasoned professional models. They put their heart into for sure. They came dressed perfectly with smiles on their faces and they didn’t let the wind or cold slow them down a bit. This was one of those times I just sat at my desk going through these with a grin on my face. I was very happy how they turned out.

They will be getting married this month. I can’t wait. If the engagement session was any indication, it will be a fun wedding.

The Ranch At Rock Creek 1 of …

At long last I’ve found a few minutes to get a post out about my stay at The Ranch At Rock Creek.  I was brought on last week for a two part mission.  Assignment 1 was to get some images for the Ranch’s marketing materials and Assignment 2 was to capture documentary pictures of the corporate group of 30 or so that were there for the week as an incentive reward for their performance.  The tricky part was that all of this was to go down simultaneously.  I arrived on Tuesday and left on Friday evening (technically on Saturday since I missed my Friday evening flight out of Missoula, but that’s another story for another post).

My days started at 5:30 am with landscapes and exterior pictures of the cabins and houses.  The Montana light around 6-8 am was amazing.

Around 9 I’d stop for a quick 15 minute breakfast prepared by the amazing Kelley in the Lodge.  I had lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberries one morning that were like nothing I’ve ever had.  I don’t even have the vocabulary to describe what they were like.  They were like no other pancake I’ve ever had, and stand in a class of their own (which you come to expect at the Ranch).  I am currently attempting to recreate them at home. Today was trial one, and although they were good, they weren’t quite there yet.

Between 9 and noon I’d run around what seemed like the entire 10 square miles of ranch land to photograph different activities the group was participating in.  They were broken into different groups doing fly fishing, skeet shooting, 44 cal pistol shooting, archery, jeep tours and other outdoor activities.  I think a few even took in the world class spa at the Lodge.

For lunch one day was an amazing bison burger cooked to perfection, prepared by chef Josh.  The next day was the chili cook-off for lunch.

In the evenings was another session of activities (it’s like summer camp for adults) until dinner.  I would catch up with one group then try to find the next, all while sneaking in for interior cabin shots and outside pictures as well when the light was right.  It was the most intensive photography work I’ve done to date.  By the time dinner rolled around I was exhausted.  Too bad, I wasn’t done yet.  Dinner and a cold beer or two and I was back at it.

Wednesday night Josh prepared an amazing four course meal for the whole group which included fresh fried trout and another dish with bison.  Every course was to die for.  Josh really is a world class chef and he is a perfect fit with the Ranch.  Josh was nice enough to let me come back in the kitchen to photograph the whole session from prep to completion.  I set up an off camera speedlite in a softbox and snapped away.  The pace was mind-blowing and the work was that of an artist.  I haven’t been in an restaurant kitchen in years and it brought back many memories.  Reminded me I once contemplated culinary school.

After dinner we went on to the Ranch Saloon (all drinks and the amazing food, as well as all the activities I mentioned before are inclusive in your stay at the Ranch) and mingled with and photographed the group having a great time.  In the Saloon there is of course a bar, complete with saddle bar stools, as well as shuffleboard, pingpong, a big screen movie screen, billiards, and four lanes of state of the art bowling.  I’m telling you, they’ve thought of it all.

More to follow in another post soon.  Stay tuned.

I had such an insanely busy couple of days I’ve had no time to make a post.  I worked on the Ranch from 5:30am to past midnight each day, leaving no time to even look at the images, much less post any.  The week was amazing and I’ll get into it more in the very near future when I have a chance to put up some work.  It was a grueling schedule and certainly the hardest I’ve work doing photography.  I’ll do my best to post an update with images on Monday.  Now I sit in Seattle airport, a day late after missing my flight (long story), having a beer for breakfast.  Have you ever had one of those experiences where you have such an unexplainably amazing week or couple of days, when it’s so bittersweet to be heading back to reality?  That’s me right now.  The Ranch At Rock Creek is such an amazing place, it’s very difficult to leave.  I was treated like an absolute king while I was there, waited on hand and foot (what does that even mean?).  The Ranch is truly a 6 star resort.  Every detail has been thought of.  I don’t want to spoil it without having some photos to show, so check back on Monday and I’ll at least have something up.  This will probably be spread out over multiple posts.

Thanks for your patience.

The Ranch at Rock Creek

A couple days ago my friend Stephanie called and asked if I was available to come out to the Ranch for a photography assignment.  The Ranch at Rock Creek is an amazing place.  Nestled in the mountains of Montana, with over 10 square miles of ranch land, the Ranch is an all inclusive getaway for families and corporate groups alike.  This week I’ll be photographing a group who are here from one of the large international auto manufacturers (I’m not exactly sure what they’re doing here so I’ll keep the name to myself but it’s the likes of Ford, Honda, Toyota, GM).  The ranch is a bit like a summer camp for adults.  They have archery, hiking, mountain biking, shooting, paintball, bowling, billiards, etc..  The food and service exceeds what I would expect to be 5 star.

I arrived in Missoula, MT around 7pm this evening and was greeted by Matt, the driver for the Ranch.  We loaded up my 5 bags of photography gear and headed an hour and a half away into the mountains for the Ranch.  Matt had called ahead to ensure I was fed and taken care of when I arrived.  As soon as I walked in I was greeted at the bar with a cold beer, followed by a delicious salad, a main dish of some of the best chicken I’ve eaten, and desert.  About 6 staff members happened to walk through the bar where I was eating and every one of them knew my name, sans introduction.  I was impressed.  The level of service here would be hard to find elsewhere, anywhere.  And I’m not even a guest!

After dinner Stephanie and I went to the saloon.  This isn’t just any old saloon.  There are two of the finest pool tables I’ve seen, a big screen movie theatre and four lanes of pristine bowling.  Each of the bar stools are saddles.

So, now we’re all settled in, in one of the big log houses on the Ranch.  I’ve got myself all set up to start working at sunrise tomorrow.  I’m going to do my best to get at least one post up per day while I’m here.  Very excited to be here.

Stay tuned…

Fine Family Portraits

I’m most touched and honored when a long time friend, a brother no less, finds value in what I do and calls on me to capture their family. I was very excited when Isaiah (Izzy) called on me to make some portraits of his new growing family. Julie and Izzy have a new little girl (which makes me an uncle, at least in my eyes) named Zadie. Zadie is such a great baby with a charming personality. Izzy and I served in the Navy together way back in the mid 90′s and have been great friends ever since. I’m excited to see this family getting started and wish them all the best.
Julie…Izzy…I hope you love the pictures. I am so happy for all three of you and looking forward to seeing Zadie grow!
Love you guys.

Hummingbird

My family has an old hummingbird feeder that belonged to grandma down at our family cabin. It works great to attract the quick little birds. They are certainly a challenge to capture. When frozen with a quick shutter speed they’re neat to see in details we don’t normally.

For all three: 1/8000, f/4.0, ISO 2000 at around 165mm

Cline Twins

My girlfriend’s nephew and his wife just had two beautiful, yet early, twin girls.  After over a month at the USF hospital they are thrilled to have their little girls home under their own roof.  Mikaela and Kesara  are now about 8 weeks old and somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 and 6 pounds and doing pretty well.  I’m reminded of my friend Charlotte and the trials she went through with her twins here and here.  It takes a special type of people to cope with the challenges in the early days.  Michelle and Brandon have the hearts to be great parents and I’m sure they’re going to be awesome.  I’m always honored to have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a family’s most cherished and special moments.

These are just a few of the snapshots I took the other day.  This wasn’t a “photoshoot” so to speak, I just had my camera, so it was a pretty simple set up.  Mostly available light with a couple including a little speedlight fill.  There are more on Facebook if you go to the Mark Sweeney Photography Page.

Best wishes Brandon, Michelle, Mikaela & Kesara!  I’m looking forward to watching them grow up.

Oh ya, a most happy early Father’s Day Brandon!

S.D. Visit

A while back Lindsi and I went down to visit some friends in S.D.  We had a great couple nights hanging out with Rob and Jennifer and their two kids. San Diego is one of those places that’s hard to leave once you’re there.  Luckily the weather wasn’t too great so we were able to leave at the end.  Their kids were so funny and I couldn’t help but drag my camera in and capture some of our time together.

Thanks Jen and Rob for good sushi and Taco Tuesday!!

S.F.

I went up to see my cousin who was in town from Vermont on business the other day.  Watched the Bruins get beat in the last seconds of Game 1 and cruised the City a bit.  A quick but great visit.  Just a quick post to share some images of the day.  Oh yea, we also went to a bar on Pier 47 at Lou’s and saw a blues band called Willie G and the G Spots (don’t ask me!).  They were very very good and they’re regulars.  Here is a video clip of them.  It doesn’t do them justice.  They were very good.

And some pics from the trip:

Stephanie and Abraham are engaged!

Stephanie and Abraham have a great story about their engagement.
It is tradition for Stephanie to take her mom out to dinner at her favorite restaurant for her birthday. So, like other years, mom, Stephanie and Abraham all went out to dinner. While at dinner, Abraham was not acting quite himself and kept getting up to go to the restroom. He’s usually very talkative and upbeat, but not on this night. After dinner he was even sitting there silently trembling in the car ride to Stephanie’s aunt’s house for some celebratory cake and ice cream. Stephanie didn’t want to go because she feared Abraham was getting sick. Her mom was insistent that he was fine, so they went. They showed up to find a bunch of family at the house to join in the festivities. After saying hi to everyone, they told Stephanie to go get the cake they had for her mom. She brought the cake over to her mom, and holding it, started to sing Happy Birthday. Everyone started telling Stephanie to read the cake. Misunderstanding Stephanie told her mom insistently, “yea, read the cake!” The crowd of family said, “No, you read the cake Stephanie.” When she did she saw that the cake read, “Will you marry me?” As she got over the initial shock, she turned around to find Abraham down on one knee with ring in hand.
At the end of the night she asked Abraham why he was so nervous and he stated that he just wanted her to say yes.
Stephanie and Abraham dated in High School then were re-aquatinted about three years ago.
The fact that they are total opposites helped them find each other. In high school Abraham was disciplined for being loud in class by being moved next to the shy quiet Stephanie because according to her teacher, “she never talks.” The rest is history.
Congratulations on your engagement Stephanie and Abraham!
